An underground market for unapproved slimming medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Worries
However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting products of uncertain source.
Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Material Removal
According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Operations
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Item Details and Pricing
Within these communities, messages show black plastic packages with postal service labels, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in interest to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
