As any significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
