Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
