EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
